"Serial" host Sarah Koenig and the producers of the podcast surprised fans this week with a special episode about Season 1 subject Adnan Syed. Starting on Thursday, Feb. 4, the podcast will release daily mini-episodes of "Serial" that will run alongside Season 2 and update listeners about Syed's post-conviction hearing.

"This week, I'm going to do something I haven't done before, which is duck back into Adnan Syed's case for a few days to report on a court proceeding that's happening in Baltimore," Koenig said at the beginning of the 15-minute mini-episode, according to The Slate.

"Sarah Koenig ducks back into the Adnan Syed case for a few days. There's a hearing in Baltimore-a court proceeding that's been nearly sixteen years in the making," the description of the mini-episodes read on the "Serial" website. "Syed's attorney will introduce new evidence, and present a case for why his conviction should be overturned. Sarah and producer Dana Chivvis will discuss what happens, day by day."

Syed was sentenced to life in prison in 1999 after he was convicted of the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. This week, he is back in court and seeking a new trial in a three-day hearing, according to The Baltimore Sun. Koenig will attend all three days of the hearings and then recap them for the mini-episodes. Syed's attorneys are in court arguing that his original attorney, Christina Gutierrez, was incompetent at the time of his trail and that she was declining in a number of ways, including physically, professionally and financially, Mashable reported.
