The creator and narrator of the popular true crime podcast "Serial," Sarah Koenig, appeared on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" Wednesday night to discuss the second season as she continues her journey to discover what exactly happened to Season 2 subject Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.
"Serial" was the first major breakout podcast and was downloaded over 1 million times during its first season. As Colbert and Koenig discussed the popularity of the show and the format of the podcast, the "Serial" narrator discussed her many phone conversations with the Taliban.
"Did you call 1-800-TALIBAN?" Colbert asked. "How does one get in touch with the Taliban?"
"We've been working with this wonderful reporter, Sami Yousafzai," Koenig replied. "He's based in Islamabad, and he knows all these guys. He grew up with a lot of them."
"What you have to do actually, because they're all worried about being listened to, so Sami had to get basically a burner phone so they could safely do it," Koenig said.
This prompted Colbert to ask Koenig if the Taliban was actually listening to "Serial."
"Sami told me that yeah, they have listened to it," Koenig replied.
