Netflix Announces Premiere Dates For First Feature Films

Netflix has revealed the premiere dates for its first batch of feature films including movies from Adam Sandler, Judd Apatow and "True Detective" director Cary Fukunaga, according to Deadline.

The streaming service will debut its first theatrical film on Oct. 16 with Fukunaga's "Beasts of No Nation." Based on the novel by Nigerian author Uzodinma Iweala, the story follows a child soldier ripped from his family and forced to fight in a civil war in an unnamed African nation. Idris Elba stars as a warlord who mentors the young boy, played by Abraham Attah.

In addition to its Netflix release, the distributor Bleecker Street will release the film in select U.S. theaters, which will make it eligible for awards consideration this year.

Next on the docket is the first of Adam Sandler's four planned movies with the service, "The Ridiculous 6." Another Happy Madison Production, Sandler stars alongside Taylor Lautner, Terry Crews, Jorge Garcia, Rob Schneider, Luke Wilson and Nick Nolte.

Frank Coraci ("The Wedding Singer") directed the comic Western, which also features many of Sandler's favorite supporting players including Steve Buscemi, David Spade and John Turturro. "The Ridiculous 6" will premiere on Dec. 11.

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Legend," the sequel to the 2001 Oscar-winning Best Foreign Language Film, will premiere in the first quarter of 2016. It will also be released in theaters in China and in IMAX.

Michelle Yeoh will reprise her role as Yu Shu-Lien. "The Green Legend" also stars Donnie Yen, Harry Shum Jr., Jason Scott Lee, Roger Yuan, Eugenia Yuan and Natasha Liu Bordizzo. The prolific martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping directed the film, produced by The Weinstein Company.

The next film to make its debut on Netflix will be "Pee-Wee's Big Holiday," a collaborative project between Judd Apatow and Paul Reubens, who plays the iconic character. Reubens co-wrote the script with and Judd Apatow. Reubens co-wrote the script with Paul Rust and John Lee directed the film, which will premiere in March 2016.
