Katy Perry's new single "Roar" is sure to be a hit. It has catchy lyrics, an upbeat sound and encourages women to stand up and be heard. Many of the singer's fans love the song but many people feel the song isn't original.
According to Radar Online, many people are upset and feel Perry copied Sara Bareilles' song "Brave." Even though the songs has different lyrics, they do sound a lot alike. According to samethattune.com, both songs have nearly identical tempos and are both in the key B flat and change to G minor. It's hard to deny that they do heavily favor each other.
It's not clear if the "California Girls" singer intentionally copied the song but she has listened to it and likes it. Back in May, Perry tweeted "I heart you @sarabareiless" and included a link to "Brave."
Bareilles released her song April 23 and "Roar" was officially released in August. Twitter instantly blew up with fans commenting how much the songs sounded the same.
Former MTV VJ Dave Holmes tweeted: "It's disappointing that Katy Perry borrowed Sara Bareilles' song instead of her overall thing of being good at her job."
According to Radar, Perry's producer Dr. Luke claims that even though "Brave" came out first Perry had already written and recorded her song by April.
Even though a lot of people are upset over the similarities in the song, Bareilles seems fine with it. She recently tweeted "All love everybody. All love." The comparisons between the songs has paid off for her, however. Billboard announced that her song jumped from number 66 to 46 the week of August 18.
According to Yahoo! Music, the songs have two separate meanings despite their similarities. "Brave" was inspired by a friend who was afraid of coming out publicly and "Roar" is an anthem for women to stand up and be heard.
"Roar" is the first single from Perry's upcoming album Prism.
