The Mexican drug lord, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who has been placed in Forbes Magazine's list of billionaires, has escaped from prison for the second time.
Mexican authorities have launched a manhunt for Guzman, who was last seen in the shower area of the Altiplano prison, 90 kilometers (56 miles) outside of Mexico City, at around 9 p.m. on Saturday, prompting a manhunt and suspension of flights at nearby Toluca airport, according to the Associated Press.
Guzman has been included by Forbes Magazine among the "World's Most Powerful People" and ranked above the presidents of France and Venezuela. However, he also ranks in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's most-wanted list, as he faces multiple federal drug trafficking indictments.
The escapee had only spent more than a year in prison after he was caught a second time in February 2014. He had been on the run for a decade since his first escape in 2001.
The influence of Guzman's Sinaloa Cartel empire is believed to stretch through North America, Europe and Australia. Sinaloa is reported to be in control of the major distribution lines for drugs at the U.S. border with Mexico.
The cartel has been reported to be involved in the drug war that has pervaded parts of Mexico, taking at least an estimated 100,000 lives, BBC News reported.
