Matthew Muller was arrested this week for kidnapping Denise Huskins back in March, a case that was initially deemed a hoax by police. The 38-year-old former Marine was charged last month after he was arrested in South Lake Tahoe during a home-invasion robbery in the San Francisco Bay Area, which bore similarities to the so-called "Gone Girl" kidnapping of Huskins, HNGN previously reported.
The arrest came as a complete surprise to Muller's friends, family and relatives. They said he was a man with a bright resume and a promising future.
Bruce Day, the father-in-law of Muller's stepbrother, said that he met Muller once at his daughter's house for Christmas and said he was "engaging" and "seemed like a very nice young man."
Muller was a U.S. Marine veteran, a graduate of Harvard Law School and a member of the bar in the state of California.
With this resume, Muller seemed to have everything going for him - that is, until the past few years where he fell in a downward spiral.
Muller was fired from his post as an immigration attorney, filed for bankruptcy and lost his license to practice law over claims that he failed to file a green card application for a client after he took an advanced payment of $1,250, according to the Associated Press.
The FBI has also unsealed a sworn affidavit that contains more information on the other side of Muller. The affidavit states that Muller had served in the Marines from 1995 to 1999, attended Harvard Law from 2003 to 2006 and taught there from 2006 to 2009. The affidavit also reveals that he suffered from psychosis and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder back in 2008.
Muller, who is from Orangevale, is currently detained at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, Calif, according to ABC News.
