Samsung has officially confirmed the existence and release date of its previously rumored wearable smartwatch that will augment its Galaxy lineup of smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy Gear will be released, as expected, on Sept. 4 in Berlin during next week's IFA Consumer Electronics Fair.
According to PCMag, the news was broken by a senior company executive in an interview with the Korea Times on Tuesday. Younghee Lee, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile business was the first from the company to confirm the project's existence.
"We will be introducing a new wearable device concept called Galaxy Gear at our own event in Berlin on Sept. 4" Lee told the paper.
According to her information, the Galaxy Gear will have a non-flexible display that will "enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways."
Samsung has seen massive amounts of success with its Galaxy lineup of smartphone. Many hail the device as being the best Android alternative on the market and the device, despite its poor initial reception, has even managed to pull customers away from Apple's iPhone.
Rumors about the Galaxy Gear smartwatch picked up steam when the Galaxy Gear name was revealed this month via a U.S. Patent and Trademark Office request. The patent identified the device as "Wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band, or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages."
Despite the not-so-subtle patent spilling the beans, Lee's remarks represent the first time the South Korean Tech giant has acknowledged the project. Little is known about the actual functionality of the Galaxy Gear other than it will be compatible with smartphones, tablets and PCs. It will also provide wireless storage, transmission of data and messages as well as management of personal information's, according to PCMag.
Lee was also able to confirm the same release date, Sept. 4, for the Galaxy Note III.
