Be fruitful and multiply, for new research shows that raspberries have been linked to fertility in men and women, the Daily Mail reports.
Research from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory demonstrates the high levels of Vitamin C found in raspberries, a "key nutrient in male fertility, and magnesium, which is involved in the production of testosterone," the berries also thought to help protect sperm against "oxidative stress."
In the new study, men over the age of 44 who consumed the most Vitamin C had 20 percent less damage to their sperm than those who did not eat foods such as raspberries, broccoli and potatoes. The antioxidants found in raspberries are also believed to help women prevent against miscarriages, as the fruit contains essential nutrients for both men and women.
"Raspberries have not yet been given the 'super-food' recognition of other berries, but they have a comparable bounty of nutrients which shouldn't be ignored," Juliet Wilson, a leading fertility nutritionist, told the Daily Mail, adding that one portion of raspberries contains the same amount of Vitamin C as 173 grapes.
"Alongside their many health benefits, raspberries are a perfect snack for couples trying to conceive," she said. "They are also a good source of folate, which is known to be essential in key stages of female fertility and early embryo development."
Eating raspberries can also help you maintain a healthy weight, as the they have the lowest level of glycemic index found in any fruit, meaning the body absorbs their sugar much more slowly. A healthy body weight is key to balancing hormones, thus increasing the likelihood of conceiving, according to the Daily Mail.
"Raspberries are often overlooked, but their numerous fertility-boosting properties and antioxidants make them the perfect bedtime snack," said Nick Marston of British Summer Fruits. "This year we've had faultless growing conditions with the cool spring and recent warm weather, which have resulted in exceptionally tasty and juicy raspberries - so there's no excuse not to take advantage of this superfood."
