The jury deliberated for 13 hours in the case against James Holmes, who faces 165 counts for the 2012 mass shooting in an Aurora, Colorado movie theater. A verdict has been reached, according to The Associated Press. It's expected to be announced at the Arapahoe County Courthouse at 6:00 P.M. Thursday evening, which will give the families of victims and the media a chance to arrive at the courthouse.
The verdict was originally supposed to be announced at 4:15, but was likely been delayed due to breaking national news involving a gunman's attack on a both military recruitment center and military base in Tennessee.
The jury, which consists of nine women and three men, reached its decision after hearing three months of testimony.
In total, James Holmes is facing 165 counts, including 12 counts of first-degree murder of 12 people that died in the shootings. The other counts are connected to the 70 people he wounded in the Century 16 Theater in Aurora during a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" on July 20, 2012.
Holmes also faces lesser charges related to weapons position and explosives he used to boobytrap his apartment. They were wired to trigger upon a police investigation of the premises.
Holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Along with his lawyers, however, the so-called "Joker Killer" - a reference to "The Dark Knight Rises" - continues to affirm responsibility for his actions while maintaining he does not know right from wrong because he is insane.
That point remains a key argument in his defense, and likely appeals, even although two state-appointed forensic psychiatrists who examined him after the shooting found him mentally ill but capable of understanding the consequences of his actions.
Two defense psychiatrists disputed the thrust of that analysis and have testified that Holmes is schizophrenic and delusional, concluding that he can't be held accountable for his actions.
If the jury convicts Holmes, the trial will then enter the sentencing phase. You can watch the verdict announcement below, via NBC News.
