Showtime Cancels ‘Happyish’ After One Season

Sad news for "Happyish." Showtime has cancelled the series after one season.

Showtime CEO David Nevins originally developed the comedy for the late Philip Seymour Hoffman with creator and executive producer Shalom Auslander. Hoffman died just weeks after production wrapped on the pilot.

Steve Coogan eventually replaced him, but the show did keep Kathryn Hahn from the pilot. Bradley Whitford and Ellen Barkin joined as new cast members for the pilot reshoot.

"Happyish" is the only Showtime original program to not receive a second season under Nevins despite his strong, early support for the project. Only 430,000 viewers tuned in for the April premiere and the show received mixed reviews from critics.

Nevins reportedly considered ditching the project after Hoffman's death, but didn't want to give up on the five additional episodes written by Auslander.

"If it had just been a pilot, I probably would have thrown in the towel," the CEO told The Hollywood Reporter in April. "I loved the idea of a show about that moment in midlife, midcareer when you say, 'Is it all worth it?' These kind of comedies don't grow on trees."
