Alton Harvey, 42, one of two men suspected of driving off with a bag containing $150,000 in cash that was left behind by ATM workers in Mahwah, N.J., allegedly used some of the money to purchase a Chevy Tahoe SUV, police reported.
Harvey was arrested Wednesday after police traced a white van that was captured on surveillance video pulling up to a bag of cash that ATM employees forgot outside a local business on Industrial Avenue Monday. Surveillance videos showed a man leaving the van to take the bag before the pair drove off.
Police reported seeing the van in another video pulling into a nearby auto repair business and stealing used tires, according to the Associated Post. The footage was not clear enough to read the vehicle registration or identify the occupants, but police were able to make an arrest after searching a license plate database and locating the van in Irvington.
Mahwah police detectives also determined that a Chevy Tahoe with temporary license plates seen in Irvington may have belonged to one of the people involved in the theft. Their assumption was supported by the fact that this SUV was purchased the same day the two men committed the crime, according to Sport Act. Their suspicions were confirmed when Harvey verified that an SUV was indeed purchased with the stolen money.
Harvey is being held on $125,000 bail, charged with theft of mislaid property.
Police identified the other man as Jamar Bludson, 35, of Newark. He has also been charged with theft of mislaid property, and is wanted for a probation violation, according to KSL.
Investigators determined that the two men acted alone and the ATM workers weren't involved in the theft.
