’50 Shades of Grey’ Movie Cast: Matt Bomer was Never Considered for the Role of Christian Grey; Robert Pattinson was E.L. James’ First Choice

There's been a lot of talk about the lead roles in "Fifty Shades of Grey" following the casting announcement on Monday. E.L. James tweeted to her followers that Dakota Johnson would play Anastasia Steele and "Pacific Rim" actor Charlie Hunnam will star as the kinky billionaire Christian Grey.

Many fans were upset and shocked with the decision but others trusted that the executives and producers knew what they were doing. Many of them - including Dana Brunetti, Michael de Luca and even E.L. James herself- tweeted in defense of their choice.

Others sounded off including author and screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis. He tweeted to his followers that he had spoken to James over the summer and her first choice to play Christian Grey was not Hunnam, Hollywood Life reports.

"Talked to E.L. James at a party over the summer: her first choice for Christian was Rob Pattinson and Matt Bomer was never in the running," he wrote. "E.L. James and I were at Rob Pattinson's house when she admitted that Rob was first choice for Christian. Ian Somerhalder was never in the running."

Pattinson's name had come up before when a photo surfaced of James attending a party at his house. The "Twilight" actor was reportedly throwing a party at his Los Angeles home for his friend Nicholas Jarecki.

It was a pretty impressive guest list and tons of celebrities and Hollywood stars attended the bash but their picture ignited rumors that he was going to be cast as Christian Grey. Ellis didn't mention why Pattinson was not cast as the billionaire.

It had already been reported that Somerhalder was out of the running when a source told US Weekly that James had reportedly told people at a San Diego Comic Con party that the "Vampire Diaries" star was not in the running. Fans are probably shocked to find out Bomer wasn't either.

The "White Collar" star was a continuous fan-favorite to play the troubled CEO.
