Jemma Simmons and her best friend Leo Fitz looked ready to take a major step in their relationship as "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." wrapped up its second season in May. Unfortunately, Fitz thoughtlessly left the door open to the colossal Kree stone, which took the opportunity to swallow Simmons whole.
Despite being devoured by the mysterious alien rock, Elizabeth Henstridge assures viewers will see Simmons again and soon when the Marvel TV series returns this fall on ABC.
"We're going to find out what happened to Simmons pretty quickly," Henstridge told TVLine. "She's definitely changed by the experience, and what happened to her is going to impact the season - kind of as a theme or something like that."
The English actress stayed mum on how exactly her character will return, but while filming the final scene for last season, she said she never thought the "S.H.I.E.L.D." write would "go that far" with the outcome.
"I thought, 'She's probably just inside the rock. Stuck.' But all my ideas are quite boring. [The writers'] imaginations are much better than mine," Henstridge said.
Any sign of life for the S.H.I.E.L.D. scientist should come as a reprieve for Simmons fans after executive producers Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen teased her character would be "already very dead" during the Marvel TV presentation at San Diego Comic-Con last month.
Perhaps she'll see her crush, Agent Triplett (B.J. Britt), wherever the Kree stone takes her. His possible return was also hinted at during the video presentation.
A skeptic of the Inhumans population, which made their presence known last season, most notably with Skye a.k.a Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) being one of them, Simmons' opinion of the special powered persons may change in the wake of this experience.
"It will be interesting to see if her views on Inhumans have changed at all," Henstridge said, "and how that alters her relationships with the other people."
"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." will return for season three on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 9 p.m. on ABC.
