Police arrested a mother who abandoned a stroller with her newborn baby boy in it on a sidewalk in South Los Angeles on Saturday.
The baby was discovered by a homeless man named Alex Diaz, who said that he had seen the stroller on Monday. When he saw the stroller in the same spot early Tuesday afternoon, he decided to check it and then saw the baby inside.
"Something in me told me to check in it. I moved the blanket and there he was, a newborn baby boy. He seemed weak, like he couldn't even move no more," Diaz said, according to NBC 4 Southern California.
Some residents had actually spotted the stroller on Monday on the sidewalk at the exact same location as well, but they assumed it had been discarded and was empty.
After the police and paramedics arrived on the scene, the infant was immediately taken to a local hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition, according to My FOX LA.
The mother was identified as 20-year-old Belen Ramirez, a native of Long Beach. She was arrested on Saturday and faces charges on child cruelty and endangerment. Bail has been set to $100,000.
Officer Mike Lopez, the spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department, revealed that under the state's Safely Surrendered Baby Law, parents who do not wish to keep their newborn children can surrender them at hospitals or fire stations within 72 hours immediately after the birth, according to the Los Angeles Times.
