49ers Fan Dies After Falling Off Pedestrian Walkway In Candlestick Park, Allegedly Intoxicated

The 49ers home-game win in San Francisco, Calif. on Sunday was overshadowed by the death of a football fan who tragically fell over an elevated walkway at Candlestick Park.

The Associated Press reports the death occurred just after kick off. According to police officials, the man appeared to be intoxicated before he fell over the walkway.

Police spokesman Gordon Shyy said, "off-duty medics and police officers gave the man first aid until an ambulance arrived, but he was declared dead from his injuries."

The 49ers spokesman Bob Lange confirmed to AP the team was aware of the deadly accident.

"We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time," Lange said in an email statement.

Authorities have no released the vitcim's name, describing him as a man who appeared to be in his 30s.

The 49ers' official website lists a strict policy for tailgating and consuming alcohol on the stadium premises, including a limit to the amount of alcoholic beverages fans may purchase at the concession stands:

Guests MUST be 21 years of age or older and in possession of proper government issued identification to purchase or consume alcoholic beverages within Candlestick Park and the 49ers Interior and Internal Parking Lots. There is a maximum of two (2) beers per purchase at all concession stands. All alcohol sales will be discontinued at the end of the 3rd Quarter (or earlier at Management's discretion). Patrons will not be allowed to enter Candlestick Park if they are, or are perceived to be, intoxicated. Drunk and disorderly conduct or violation of any alcohol policy may result in ejection from Candlestick Park without refund.

According to AP the death occurred the same day as a railing collapsed at an Indianapolis Colt's game against the Oakland Raiders. The accident injured two people who were leaning against the railings, located about the tunnel leading to the Raider's locker room.

The 49ers won 34-28 over the Packers, winning their final season opener at Candlestick Park. The team will move into $1.2 billion Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.
