Jess, a woman believed to reside in America, used Fitbit, the exercise gadget that tracks running and other forms of exercise, to keep track of her heart rate while having sex.
Using her account noveltysin, she posted the data she gathered on the community site Reddit under the section r/dataisbeautiful. She also made notations about it.
The data recorded 8 minutes and 59 seconds of the act and, based on her notes, Jess was able to log the dip and spike of the activity.
Six minutes into the act, Jess had an orgasm and a heart rate of 123. Another orgasm followed shortly thereafter.
"I was curious about my heart rate during sex. So really, [I did it] for science," she said, according to the Daily Mail. "When I checked the readout, I was amazed about how I could correlate the spikes and valleys to actual actions." She admitted, however, there was at least a 20-minute foreplay beforehand, which was not tracked.
While Jess' data gathering was not an official scientific experiment, it was similar to a study done in 1956, according to Gizmodo. The graphs from the old study are quite similar to Jess' graphs.
Jess' experiment highlights how sex can be a viable form of exercise that many studies have already proven to work in the past. One previous study showed women burn 90 calories, while men burn 120 calories, with each sex act. Sex works even better than going on a treadmill, according to Harvard Health.
Users on Reddit had different reactions to Jess' experiment, with some saying they may also use Fitbit to keep track of their own heart rate during sex.
