While it is somewhat early in the recruiting of players from the class of 2016 it is odd to see Kentucky not have a crazy amount of commitments from top players in the class. So far Big Blue Nations only commit is four-star power forward Tai Wynyard who barely cracks the top 100 on most lists. That all may change soon though as one of the top prospects in the class De'Aaron Fox reportedly cut his list to seven schools with Kentucky being one of them, according to Scott Phillips of NBC Sports.
Aside from Kentucky the other schools that made his list are Arizona, Kansas, Louisville, LSU, North Carolina and N.C. State. At this point Fox has yet to take any official visits but he has gone on an unofficial visit to Kansas which would make his recruitment seem wide open which it likely is. Despite the lack of official visits so far Kentucky is the popular pick to land the 6 foot-4 guard, according to 247 Sports.
Fox is listed as a point guard but is widely considered a combo guard and is one of the best two-way players in his class. The Katy, Texas native has the potential to be a lockdown perimeter defender while also being able to fill it up on offense. This spring/summer Fox played with Houston Hoops in the Nike EYBL and in 23 games he averaged 17.5 points, 5.7 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game.
Fox is ranked as the third best point guard in the 2016 class and the tenth best prospect overall, according to ESPN. Many scouts consider Fox to be a recruit with one of the highest upsides in the class but the major knock against him is his lack of strength. Fox currently weighs 165 lbs. so he will certainly have to hit the weight room in order to be able to handle the physical nature of college basketball.
Kentucky fans should not be worried just yet about their lack of recruits in the 2016 class but landing Fox would be a great start for them. At this point it looks like the Wildcats and the Kansas Jayhawks seem to be the two favorites to land the young guard but he still has visits to take. Kentucky is in on a lot of the top recruits in the class of 2016 so whether they land Fox or not they will likely be just fine.
