A man is accused of robbing a bank to afford his daughter's chemotherapy sessions, police say. Brian Randolph from Michigan allegedly robbed the Vibe Credit Union Bank located in South Lyon, Mich. on Aug.12, ABC News reported.
Authorities say that 23-year-old Randolph entered the bank and handed a note demanding money. Also written int he note was a threat that he was carrying a shotgun inside his clothes, but police have confirmed that the man did not really carry a weapon with him.
Randolph has been charged with armed robbery and had been set with a bond of $500,000.
His financial woes started when his insurance company informed him that it would no longer pay for his daughter's chemotherapy sessions. One-year-old Brialynn is under treatment for retinoblastoma, which is a form of cancer in the eye that costs thousands of dollars to treat, according to Fox 8.
"I guess it was desperation. Time was ticking right before her appointment came up," said Asia Dupree, the young girl's mother.
Upon his arrest two days later, authorities have seen contradicting evidence in his home against his motive of robbing the bank for his daughter's chemo. Inside his car, police found a Gucci bag, a set of expensive clothes and a pair of high-end shoes that were recently purchased, according to Lt. Chris Sovik of South Lyon Police Department, Detroit Free Press reported.
"If that is the case," Sovik said, "I can certainly understand. You want to do everything you can to protect your daughter. But there are lots of fathers whose daughters have cancer as well, and you don't see them out there robbing banks all the time."
Randolph allegedly left with cash worth $8,100. When he was taken into custody, authorities only recovered $3,100 since he also paid rent that hadn't been paid in months.
