A sheriff's deputy in Houston, Texas was killed in an execution-style shooting Friday night, Texas authorities report.
The victim, identified as Darren H. Goforth, 47, was at a Houston area gas station when he was shot by an unidentified male, according to CNN.
Goforth fell to floor after being shot, but the gunman was finished. He stood above Goforth and shot him several more times, leaving Goforth dead at the scene.
"He was literally gunned down in what appears to be an unprovoked, execution-style killing," Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman said. "I have been in law enforcement for 45 years, I have never seen anything this cold-blooded."
Police believe that the only possible motive for the shooting was that Goforth was identified by the gunman as a member of law enforcement, NBC News reported.
The gunman, who police believe to be between 20 and 25 years old and stands between 5-foot-10 and six feet tall, drove off in a red Ford Ranger, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Authorities started a manhunt for the suspect upon hearing of the shooting from nearby witnesses.
Police have a man in custody who is "believed to be the alleged gunman," CNN reported. However, they haven't reached any conclusions about his alleged connection.
The incident comes just a few days after two journalists were killed by a disgruntled man who wanted a race war.
