Dog Names: Your Choice Of Name Says A Lot About You

Some people take the act of naming their dog very seriously, while others just seem to want a bit of fun. And why not? As the website The Dog Snobs points out, we're not restricted by societal norms and guidelines.

There are different categories of naming groups and The Dodo has put together a great list of these groups and their true meaning. Let's explore what your dog's name says about you:

1 - Sports Name

Besides our pets, we do love our sports. Think teams (Raider), sports (Rugby) or venues (Fenway) and you get the message. Top sports themed names in 2014 were Champ, Chase and Wrigley.

2 - Person Name

Eighteen of the top 20 dog names in 2014 were human names, and it is no surprise to any of us. We do feel like our pets are our family. People even refer to them as furbabies and granddogs. Top human names in 2014 included Max, Charlie, Bella or Lucy.

3 - Disney Name

This category reflects our inner whimsy - the Peter Pan quality in us all that says we can do anything and should set our sights high. Think Lady and Nala - yes, Nala is still high ranking in 2014, "The Lion King" was a true favorite.

4 - Pop Culture

This category is perfect for people who are a little trendy, sometimes even nerdy. Did you have a Gizmo growing up or a furby? Think new pop culture names like Piper (from the hit Netflix show "Orange is the New Black") or Dexter (from the TV show "Dexter").

5 - Food Name

Favorites that are always popular, especially with the foodies, are food names. The top names in 2014 for foodies were Ginger, Pepper and Peanut.

Whatever you choose it is a direct reflection of you. "The name of a dog reflects the personality and sense of humor of the owner," says Lisa Peterson, spokeswoman for the American Kennel Club. A dog's name reveals your interests, which often change as you grow older, according to Forbes.
