Animal Aid Unlimited continues to help stray dogs in India, as well as other species of animals in need.
One of the animal advocacy success stories – about a dog that was rescued from a pool of hot tar went viral on social media in October 2014 – created an awareness that has led many people to call Animal Aid Unlimited hotlines whenever they encounter an animal in need.
Another of Animal Aid Unlimited's success story is currently going viral – the rescue of a strat dog that got it's head caught in a house gate.
Although area neighbors heard the dog's pannicked cries no one attempted to help it because its common in Indian culture to be particularly afraid of stray dogs which frequently carry rabies. That's certainly a valid concern but Animal Aid Unlimited came to the rescue, successfully freeing and calming the dog, One Green Planet Reports.
Animal Aid Unlimited was started by Erika Abrams in 2002. Abrams is an American who moved to Udaipur, India with her family.
Right now, the organization receives around 20 calls per day, and a staff of 50 people work in animal rescue situations.
While they cater to all animal species in need, stray dogs are most in need of rescue.
"Most of the cases are adult dogs with traumatic injuries, but we also see liver damage and other problems linked to poor hygiene and nutrition. These street dogs are eating garbage, high-carb diets, and drinking dirty water polluted by chemicals and household detergents which run into open troughs," Abrams explains, according to Dogster.
Abrams also continue to promote education about animal care in her area, encouraging Indians to visit the shelters to see for themselves that stray dogs are not a danger and can be rehabilitd with proper care, making for perfect pets.
