Rockstar Games' latest installment in the "Grand Theft Auto" series hits store shelves on Tuesday, with some retailers opening as early as midnight to satisfy the demand of some of the more die-hard fans of the action game series.
To help ease the title's demand, Sony had allowed gamers to download the game ahead of it coming out, but not play it. The hope was this would prevent server crashes on its official release date. Unfortunately, this plan backfired as the company began to notice details of the games soundtrack leak to online forums. This prompted Sony to issue an apology to Rockstar Games.
"Regrettably, some people who downloaded the digital pre-order of Grand Theft Auto V through the PlayStation Store in Europe were able to access certain GTA V assets," wrote Sony's head of communications Nick Caplain, according to the Telegraph. "We sincerely apologize to Rockstar and GTA fans across the world who were exposed to spoiler content. GTA V is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year with a very passionate following, and we're looking forward to a historic launch."
The "GTA" series has been widely regarded across all of its games for having a very meticulous period soundtrack. When players enter a vehicle, they can typically choose from a variety of radio stations that each plays different genres of music. There's also usually a talk station as well.
Among the artists that will be featured in the new game are: Elton John, Queen, Britney Spears, Pulp, Snoop Dogg, Stevie Wonder, Black Flag, Pet Shop Boys, NWA and Muse.
Rockstar reportedly responded to Sony's apology with a statement saying it was "deeply disappointed" with the leaks.
