iPhone 5S vs. Nokia Lumia 925 and 1020: See Which Of The Rival Smartphones Is Right For You

Apple is gearing up to put its newest installment in the iPhone family to market on Sept. 20. With so much hype surrounding the release of the iPhone 5S with many saying that the device isn't innovative enough to match up well against some of its competitors, we wondered just how well the new smartphone from Apple stacks up against an high-end Windows powered smartphone like the Nokia Lumia 925 and 1020.

One of the first things to look at is, of course, the price of the three devices. The iPhone 5S is set at $199 for a 16GB copy. For $100 cheaper customers can get the Lumia 925 and for the same price a 32GB Lumia 1020. However, those are the only two storage options available on the Nokia devices. Meanwhile, for $299 the iPhone 5S can be upgraded to 32Gb and for $399 64GB.

The battery life on the Nokia Lumia is about 2-2.5 hours longer than the iPhone 5S, which has a 10 hour battery life (250 standby). The display sizes on the Lumia devices is about .5-inches larger than the iPhone 5S as well at 4.5-inches. However, these devices sport an AMOLED 1280x268 331ppi display versus the iPhone 5S' LED LCD IPS 1136x640 236ppi display. In other words, the iPhone screen is smaller but the display is arguably a step above the Nokia Lumia devices.

Normally the iPhone 5S has its competitors beat on cameras but the Nokia Lumia 1020 is a smartphone built around a camera and not the other way around like the iPhone 5S. With a 41MP aperature lens the Nokia 1020 is a significant improvement over the iPhone 5S 8MP rear-facing camera. Even the Lumia 925 has an 8.7MP camera. While the 925 sports the same 1.2MP front-facing camera, the Lumia 1020 has a full 2MP. While the Lumia family wins the camera battle, it's important to note that the iPhone 5S is not meant to be a photographer's phone while the Lumia 1020 is. If you're looking for a good documentation device, the Lumia is for you, if you're looking for a secure device, the iPhone 5S is likely your smartphone.

At it's Sept. 10 unveiling, Apple introduced the Touch ID fingerprint scanner. This will allow users to place a lock on their device that can only be opened when the phone scans your fingerprint.

Another difference worth noting before stopping by your local smartphone retailer is the operating system. Obviously the iPhone 5S will run on Apple's new iOS 7. Meanwhile both Nokia devices are Windows phones, an operating system that many have expressed distaste with since it came out.
