Recent reports on the Atlanta police officer that was injured after responding to a break-in, say that the homeowner - identified as 36-year-old Chris McKinley - was shot as well and his pet boxer ended up dead. The incident happened after police officers went into a wrong home around 7:35 p.m. on Monday located off Bouldercrest Road and Boulderwoods Drive in response to a burglary in process, which was previously reported by HNGN.
The officers said they received no response after repeatedly trying to contact the residents, so they decided to enter using the house's back door. The back door was unlocked giving the impression of a break in; they went inside and was said to have fired shots at the dog, the Examiner reported. It was unclear if the dog attacked the officers.
McKinley went to his kitchen to check what was happening when the officers allegedly opened fire. McKinley was shot in the leg and was immediately rushed to Atlanta Medical Center where he was given medical care.
"It could have been us. We were lying on the couch watching TV too. It's scary. It's very scary," said Jeremy Matthews, who lives in a similar house across the street, according to WSB-TV.
Tama Colson, a former first responder, was taking a walk when she heard screams. Colson ran in to help. "I had him sit down and I took off my shirt and applied pressure to the bullet wound on his leg," Colson told WSB-TV. "A third officer arrived, ran in the house and I said, 'I want a lieutenant or sergeant here now,' and he said 'Oh, S--t.'"
One of the responding officers, 26-year-old Travis Jones of DeKalb County Police, was also shot in the hip and is in critical condition and being treated at the Grady Memorial Hospital, according to the Associated Press. There were two other officers who responded to the scene.
"Early investigation indicates that the injured officer was likely shot accidentally by one of the other officers on the scene," said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in a statement but Scott Dutton, GBI spokesman added that they cannot identify who really fired the gunshots this early. He was not informed whether members of the household were armed, but GBI officials say there was no evidence of any resident committing the shooting.
McKinley returned to his home on Tuesday morning after receiving medical care. He refused to give a statement regarding the incident, according to Townhall.
