A day after Floyd Mayweather Jr. seemingly took a jab at Oscar De La Hoya's return to rehab, Mayweather posted an apology on Instagram.
Following Mayweather's win against Canelo Alvarez, an image was posted on Monday to Mayweather's Instagram account. The image mocked De La Hoya, who's Alvarez's mentor and promoter, by insinuating Alvarez lost because De La Hoya was high.
Mayweather took to Instagram on Tuesday and posted an apology.
"It's unfortunate that a stupid picture was posted to my Instagram account earlier today that was not posted by me or authorized by me to post. As I clearly stated during my fight week and again in the post-fight press conference, I completely support Oscar De La Hoya and his family during this difficult time in his life.
"I stand by him unconditionally and would never personally disrespect him or anyone else who struggled with addiction.
"I apologize to Oscar and his family for this posting. I wish him well and am rooting for him to win his fight too. I also apologize to all my followers for this ridiculous post. I have no ill-will towards anyone."
De La Hoya, who has admitted in the past to abusing alcohol and cocaine, announced last week he'd be returning to rehab and would be unable to attend be the Mayweather-Alvarez fight.
"Canelo Alvarez and I have big fights coming up this weekend," De La Hoya said in a statement last week, via ESPN. "His is the ring and mine in treatment. I will not be at the fight to cheer Canelo to victory since I have voluntarily admitted myself into a treatment facility.
"I explained this to Canelo, and he understood that my health and long-term recovery from my disease must come first."
Mayweather defeated De La Hoya in 2007, winning by a split decision. He won by a majority decision on Saturday against De La Hoya's protégée, Alvarez.
