A hammerhead shark attacked a kayaker near Deer Creek beach in Malibu Saturday afternoon, according to authorities.
The kayaker was 1.5 miles off the shoreline when the attack took place. The shark, described as a 10-foot, 250-pound hammerhead shark, bit the lower part of one of his legs at approximately 2:30 p.m., said Lidia Barillas, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Lifeguards Division, according to The Los Angeles Times.
"It was a bite and release," Barillas said. "Nothing severe but a very deep wound."
The kayaker, who has not yet been identified, flagged down a fishing boat and climbed on board the vessel, where the fisherman helped him control the bleeding. He was then carried closer to the shore, after which he paddled on his own to the shoreline, CBS Local reported.
The kayaker received treatment on the scene, and medics were able to contain the bleeding before airlifting him to Los Robles Medical Center in Thousand Oaks. The victim's condition was not immediately known.
The incident follows a week after a portion of La Jolla beach was closed down after kayakers spotted a 10-foot hammerhead shark in the waters, showing signs of aggression, as HNGN previously reported.
