Labor Day Weekend has left Chicago reeling after a wave of shootings hit the city leaving six people dead and at least 29 others wounded since 6 p.m. Friday.
The first victim was a 35-year-old man who was shot at around 8:20 p.m. while inside his car, after an unknown suspect walked up to the driver's side window and opened fire, hitting the man in the stomach, reported NBC Chicago. A friend of the victim's drove the man to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
Three hours later, in what police consider a gang-related shooting, three men were shot by a gunman passing by in a car. The three men, aged 31, 22 and 28, were all hit in different areas, with the 31-year-old being hit in the torso while the other two were hit in the right leg. The 31-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.
About 20 minutes later, at 11:40, a 22-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk when an unidentified gunman in a gold SUV opened fire, striking him in the chest, abdomen and legs, reported police. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. A source indicates that this shooting may be gang-related as well.
There was an apparent lull in the violence throughout Saturday, but the shootings soon resumed on Sunday, starting with a 19-year-old woman, reported The Chicago Tribune. The woman was in an alley at an outdoor party at 1:30 a.m. when a fight broke out. One of the related parties opened fire, hitting the woman in the head. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The next fatal shooting occurred an hour later when a man, along with his friend, were standing outside a nightclub when a man drove by in a black van and opened fire. One was hit in the back while the other was hit in the upper left arm. Both were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, where the man who got hit in the back was pronounced dead. The other victim's status is unknown.
The most recent shooting occurred at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, when a woman and man were shot in an allegedly random incident. The woman was hit in the stomach and declared dead on the scene, reported WGN-TV. The man was hit in in the leg and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was in good condition.
A slew of other people were wounded over the weekend including a 15-year-old boy who was shot in throat, and a 26-year-old man who was found lying on the street with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
What links all six of the fatal shootings is that even though three of the incidents have an attributed cause, none of the shooters from any of the incidents have been apprehended.
Investigations for all the fatal shootings are underway.
