25 years ago today a little show known as "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" premiered on NBC and introduced the world to the Fresh Prince, Will Smith.
The show was about a street-wise kid from West Philadelphia (born and raised) whose mother sent him to live with his conservative extended family, according to Time. The sitcom ran from 1990-1996 and launched the career of Smith, an unknown hip-hop artist, along with others.
The 90's sitcom was based on real-life experience of producer Benny Medina and was not expected to be a hit, reported CNN.
The "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" opening song was one of the most recognizable theme's in television history and is still listened to today. The song has been covered by everyone from Jimmy Fallon to One Direction to Will Smith himself!
Characters from the sitcom are still recognized including Carlton, played by Alfonso Ribeiro. One of the most iconic parts of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" was the legendary "Carlton Dance." The dance was created when it simply said in the script "Carlton dances," according to Variety. Ribeiro said the dance was based off Courteney Cox in the Bruce Springsteen video "Dancing in the Dark."
Even though the beloved show went off the air about 19 years ago, the series still lives on in syndication.
