Warning: The following contains possible spoilers for J.J. Abram's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
If you haven't noticed, Disney loves putting post credit scenes in their Marvel films. As a result of their success, other movies and mediums have begun adopting the strategy to tease interesting future developments. But one franchise that has never employed this tactic is "Star Wars."
Until now, that is.
According to an unconfirmed report at Schmoes Know, Lucasfilm and Abrams have decided to include a post credits teaser in the upcoming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Apparently, the scene in question will provide fans with their first glimpse at the first Anthology film, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." The Gareth Edwards-directed movie will be the first in a series of standalone "Star Wars" movies and is scheduled to hit theaters in December of 2016.
If true, it would be a first for the "Star Wars" series, though now under the Disney banner it does make a bit more sense. But it's not as if any future "Star Wars" projects need additional hype to generate interest. As one of the most prominent film franchises of all-time, any new developments are treated with overzealous excitement. But perhaps "Star Wars" is just, as they say, getting with the times.
It is interesting, however, that "The Force Awakens" would tease "Rogue One" and not Rian Johnson's "Episode VIII." Typically, comic book films have been using the post credit sequences to tease future films that are down the way on the canonical timeline. But "Rogue One" takes place before the events in "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" and will center on the Rebellion's attempt to steal the plans for the first Death Star.
It is unknown whether the post credits scene will be a clip, a one-off or a full-blown trailer for "Rogue One." The movie is currently in production at the moment.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hits theaters on Dec. 18, while "Rogue One" will arrive on December 16, 2016.
