Emily Blunt Thought Becoming An American Citizen Was ‘A Terrible Mistake’

British-born actress Emily Blunt recently became a citizen of the United States, but she revealed that she almost instantly regretted her decision.

Blunt sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss her new movie "Sicario" and the current state of American politics.

"I became an American citizen recently, and that night, we watched the Republican debate, and I thought, 'This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?'" she said.

Soon after Blunt renounced Queen Elizabeth II, the actress appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" where she discussed the "bizarre day" she was made an American citizen.

"Matthew McConaughey's wife [Camila Alves] was getting sworn in with me, who is so nice," Blunt told Kimmel. "McConaughey shows up looking like he's going on safari. I was like, 'You could have worn a shirt and tie. Like, Camila looks amazing!'"

Blunt's husband, "The Office" actor John Krasinski, was in the audience to support his wife and sat next to McConaughey during the ceremony. Blunt said the entire time Krasinski was trying not to mutter McConaughey's famous line, "All right, all right, all right," from "Dazed and Confused."

"That's all he was thinking about the whole time," the actress said of her husband.

The actress most recently appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" where she also celebrated her new status as an American.

"I know more about the constitution and government than most Americans," Blunt said.

Later in the show in typical DeGeneres form, the talk show hostess dressed Blunt up like Lady Liberty and made her sing "Yankee Doodle." During her patriotic rendition of the song, Blunt got a major surprise when Uncle Sam himself scared her from behind.
