Jeff Bezos is perhaps best known as the founder and CEO of Amazon.com, but his other claim to fame is space cowboy. He announced Tuesday that Florida will become the home port for his new reusable rocket, according to Yahoo! News.
In 2000, Bezos founded Blue Origin, a private spaceflight company, which will soon launch rockets from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Gov. Rick Scott said the project will "create 330 jobs" in the state.
"Today, we're thrilled to be coming to the Sunshine State for a new era of exploration," said Bezos, reported Yahoo News. He showed off a concept sketch of a new orbital launch vehicle, nicknamed Very Big Brother, during his Tuesday announcement.
"We're not just launching from here... We're building here," said Bezos, according to the New York Times.
The reusable rocket, which lands vertically, is an innovative design. Most rockets designed today are made to crash-land after a single flight. NASA stopped flying space shuttles in 2011. Blue Origin is one of several privately-owned companies seeking to provide commercial spaceflight.
Previously, Blue Origin developed and tested a rocket called New Shepard in West Texas. This rocket can reach about 60 miles above Earth. The new rockets, which don't have an official name yet, will reach altitudes of 250 miles high, according to the Huffington Post.
"Our approach on this is very simple, which is heads down, focus on the technology," said Bezos.
