Jeff Bezos, the founder and chief executive of online retail giant Amazon, fired back at a New York Times article published Saturday that criticized the company's working conditions.
The article provided accounts from various workers sharing their tales of what it is like working for Amazon. The Times described Amazon as a "bruising workplace" where employees are pushed to their limits and asked to work long hours.
Bezos immediately responded to the report with a memo that was posted on GeekWire, saying that he did not recognize the workplace that was depicted in the article and urged anybody who knows of stories about employees being mistreated to email him directly.
"I strongly believe that anyone working in a company that really is like the one described in the NYT would be crazy to stay. I know I would leave such a company," said Bezos, according to The Wrap.
Bezos also urged his readers, his employees in particular, to read a blog post on LinkedIn written by senior Amazon employee Nick Ciubortariu, who refuted numerous points in the article and disproved these issues head on.
Ciubortariu slammed the two writers, David Streitfeld and Jodi Kantor, for not taking the time to write a fact-based article. "I've done my best to rectify that, on their behalf, as well as the New York Times. All three of you are quite welcome," he said.
