Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, a 52-years-old police officer from Illinois, reportedly died in the line of duty, as HNGN reported, but whether his death was a homicide or suicide has recently come under question. No arrests have been formally made as of now, and the three people police suspected of this murder have been cleared of all charges. Also, Gliniewicz's position suggested he possibly took his own life. "His hand was in a gun position, the firearm 'dropped at his body,'" according to Fox News.
The last time Gliniewicz was alive was when he was in pursuit of individuals suspected of a crime. Gliniewicz was discovered dead on Sept. 1 after he radioed that he was chasing "three suspicious subjects" on foot, according to People. After being discovered dead, Gliniewicz's death prompted manhunts which included dogs, law enforcement and helicopters.
The possibility that Gliniewicz committed suicide is also supported by the fact that "there was no sign of struggle or defensive wounds - especially one to save his own life," according to MSN News. However, police point out that DNA was found at the scene of the crime and it was not from Gliniewicz. This supports the idea that he was a victim of murder and not a perpetrator of suicide.
"He was the most wonderful caring and loving father to our boys," Gliniewicz's wife, Melodie, said according to People.
