Three people have been detained in relation to the early morning shooting of a Phoenix police officer on a routine traffic stop. The shooting occurred off of 12th Street, between Camelback and Indian School, at about 3 a.m., according to KTAR.
"The officer is at the hospital, thank goodness he's going to be fine," Phoenix Police Chief Joseph Yahner said, as previously reported by HNGN. "Thank goodness he was wearing his vest. He was shot multiple times, he has some significant injuries."
Police are confident they have arrested the gunman and also have another man and a woman in their custody at this time, according to AZ Central. The suspects were arrested less than a mile from the scene of the shooting.
"It's been a very trying day," said Sgt. Jonathan Howard, a Phoenix police spokesman. "The good news is that we located and detained the three people we believe are responsible for shooting our officer."
A house-to-house search for the shooter in that area led police to an apartment complex where the arrests were made.
Jim Nelms, a resident of the complex, watched it all go down. "He's not a violent person," Nelms said of the man police have in custody. "A girl opened the door and they (police) dragged her away" before taking the others into custody.
"We have located them, some of them still in the area and detained them," Howard said. "They are being transferred down to the police station now for more in-depth interviews. We are confident that we have the right people."
The names of the suspects have not yet been released.
