Comedian and talk show host Sheryl Underwood issued an apology on Monday's episode of CBS' "The Talk" for comments she made about natural hair in 2013, E! News reported. Underwood bravely removed her wig and revealed her own natural hair and wore it that way while she gave a heartfelt apology.
"I made some statements that were not only wrong, they hurt our community," Underwood says of the black community. "In my comments and trying to explain, [which] was juxtaposed against statements that were very, very hurtful- and to come out of the mouth of a very proud black woman- I was wrong, and I wanted to take the time to apologize, especially in the forum that this discussion occurred."
During the season premiere week of "The Talk," the hosts took turns with being honest about something personal in their lives, as previously reported by HNGN. Underwood chose to discuss the comments she made in 2013 about Heidi Klum's decision to save her children's hair. Klum's children are biracial, and Underwood made a joke about natural African American hair, saying "Why would you save Afro hair? You can't weave in Afro hair," according to E! News.
"I think that if you hide behind something then you are a coward," Underwood continued in the clip. "I wanted to show that I was strong enough to take the truth about what people were saying and on this network, in this chair, say I am so sorry to my community and my people for hurting you."
Underwood choked up while delivering her heartfelt apology, and the audience gave her a standing ovation.
