The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, had an idea after seeing Tony Romo go down on Sunday night with a broken collarbone, and that idea was having the Cowboys sign Tim Tebow, he tweeted.
Brandon Weeden stepped in for the injured Romo and passed for 73 yards and a touchdown. The Cowboys are 2-0 after beating division rivals the Philadelphia Eagles 20-10. The Cowboys may want to bring in another backup, but the idea of Tebow seems almost absurd.
Tebow could likely play in this league as a second- or third-string quarterback, but bringing him in to an undefeated Cowboys team after its star quarterback got hurt would become a media frenzy. The Cowboys already generate cameras, and so does Tebow.
Tebow had a good performance this preseason, throwing for 286 yards and two touchdowns, but Eagles head coach Chip Kelly went in another direction and cut him. Kelly thought Tebow needed more snaps, and the best place for that was in the CFL, according to Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Zach Berman.
Tebow is very unlikely to make it back into the league this season, and the more time he is on television - he is currently an ESPN college football analyst - the less likely his NFL future seems. It may be a fun idea to bring in Tebow, but the NFL is not a league about fun, it's a business. Teams make calculated decisions, and Tebow is likely not even to fall into the equation on this one.
