Things became physical between two men while shopping in a crowded California Costco after an argument broke out between the two over Nutella samples, leading to one man leaving with a bruised face and the other being charged with elder abuse.
The incident occurred last weekend at a Costco in Burbank, Calif., when a group of customers were waiting in line to obtain free samples of Nutella waffles. A 78-year-old man, who remains unnamed, went to take a sample, but was cut off by Derrick Gharabighi who quickly grabbed all of the remaining samples, according to the Week.
The elderly man, upset by the lack of respect shown by 24-year-old Gharabighi, grumbled and complained.
"The victim told Mr. Gharabighi that he wanted a sample and he shouldn't take so many," said Burbank Police Sgt. Claudio Losacco, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Taking offense from his statement, Gharabighi turned to the man and punched him in the face, causing the elderly victim to be hospitalized with a one-inch cut and swelling above his left eye.
Authorities were notified and arrested Gharabighi, who is being held on $50,000 bail, on charges of felony elder abuse and an additional allegation that he inflicted significant harm on a person over 70 years of age, reported CNN.
Gharabighi faces up to 11 years in prison if he is convicted.
