A Kentucky man is facing charges for his involvement in a brisket attack on another cook while at the Kentucky State BBQ Festival on Sunday.
Danville police say they were called to the festival after a dispute broke out between two pitmasters over a shared cooker, reported Newser. At some point during the confrontation Mike Ownings, 42, threw a 200 to 250-degree brisket at Mary Berry, 35, hitting her in the head, neck and shoulder.
The two were part of rival BBQ crews with Ownings working for Drapers BBQ out of Carlisle County, and Berry working with FireHouse BBQ out of Florida, according to The Advocate Messenger.
"She had burns to her shoulder, her neck area, her ear area and her right back shoulder. She was treated on scene by Boyle county EMS," said Danville Police Sgt. Jonathan Courtwright.
Upon being confronted by police, he admitted to incident, saying he simply lost his temper and "didn't mean for anyone to get hurt,"
"His words were that he just snapped and he was upset and took it off the cooker and threw it because they wanted them off there," Courtwright told NBC's Kentucky affiliate LEX18. "He threw it in that direction, not aiming to hit her, but she ended up getting hit."
Ownings has been charged with 2nd degree wanton endagerment.
