The Florida Gators have suspended starting cornerback Jalen Tabor and quarterback Treon Harris for reportedly failing a drug test and for refusal to take a drug test, according to ESPN's Brett McMurphy.
Harris reportedly failed the drug test, while Tabor reportedly refused to take the test, according to McMurphy. Head coach Jim McElwain said that they had been suspended for "some choices they made," via ESPN. "We need some guys to step up. They'll be back next week."
Harris was the starting quarterback coming into the season and made the start in the season opener against New Mexico State. Harris had a promising start throwing for 215 yards that game while also throwing two touchdowns, but that wasn't enough as Will Greer earned the starting spot in the second game against East Carolina.
While Greer already replaced Harris, finding a replacement for starting cornerback Tabor may be more challenging. The sophomore cornerback already has nine combined tackles through three games, and had an interception returned for a touchdown against East Carolina.
The Gators likely have their toughest test as of yet this weekend against the Tennessee Volunteers. The Gators will be home this Saturday, but without their starting cornerback they may be in trouble as Volunteers quarterback Joshua Dobbs will look to move the ball down the field.
Both Tabor and Harris are sophomores, but McElwain is likely hoping that these players learn from their mistake. This is a big game for the Gators against SEC East rival Tennessee, and Florida fans are likely hoping the loss of Harris and Tabor for the game doesn't impact their chanes in the conference this season.
