Tornado Damages Homes, Downs Trees In South Carolina

The National Weather Service says that a tornado has hit Charleston, S.C., according to Inquisitr.

The twister hit West Ashley and Johns Island Thursday night, causing damage to at least 10 different homes in these areas. No reports of injury came in immediately after the storm, but local residents are reporting a great deal of damage to property and trees. Emergency services have been deployed to clean up debris, downed trees and damaged power lines.

"Emergency responders from the St. John's Fire District, Charleston Fire Department, St. Andrews Fire Department, James Island Fire Department, Charleston County EMS, Charleston County Sheriff's Office, and Charleston County Volunteer Rescue Squad were dispatched for numerous request for assistance. Emergency responders encountered heavy debris from downed trees and power lines in the area," a press release from the St. John's fire district said.

Weather data shows that the tornado touched down around 12:40 a.m., local time, early Friday morning, USA Today reported.

"The tornado was especially dangerous because it spun up quickly when it did," said Dan Pydynowski, senior meteorologist for AccuWeather.

Much of the metro Charleston area was under a flash flood watch for several hours after the tornado touched down, according to Fox News.
