The forecast that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus sales might break sales records has just been realized, with Apple stating on Monday that 13 million units of its new flagship devices have been sold in their first weekend. The current sales figures far surpassed the company's record last year, when 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units were sold on their first weekend.
"Sales for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple's history," Apple CEO Tim Cook said.
Despite the company outdoing itself once more, Apple's shares fell more than 1 percent, suggesting that investors may still be somewhat skeptical that the company is capable of improving on the demand of the previous flagship devices, according to The Economic Times.
"Topping what the iPhone 6 achieved looks like a tall order, even for Apple, with its history of outdoing itself," said John Jackson, an analyst at IDC.
The massive sales figures generated over the weekend are possibly due to the release of the phone in China, which was not included last year in the initial launch due to a number of regulatory problems, reports ABC News - problems which ultimately delayed the release of the flagship devices in the Asian superpower.
The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus units will be made available in more than 40 countries starting Oct. 9 this year.
