Waylon Smithers' sexuality and his unrequited love for his boss have been long-running themes on the animated series "The Simpsons." But Smithers, the assistant to billionaire Mr. Burns, will finally come out to his boss during Season 27, reported Vulture.
"In Springfield now, most people know he's gay, but obviously Burns doesn't," revealed showrunner Al Jean to TVLine. "We deal with that in two episodes.... We actually do a lot with Smithers this year; he gets fed up with Burns not appreciating him and considers his options."
Smithers' feelings for Mr. Burns are a recurring theme on the Fox series, according to the Guardian. In many episodes, Smithers attempted to express his affections for his boss, and the show featured many jokes alluding to the fact that he is gay and in love with his boss. Smithers will finally work up the courage for the big reveal this season.
This isn't the show's first foray into exploring LGBT territory. Patty, one of Marge Simpson's twin sisters, came out as lesbian in a 2005 episode and revealed that she wanted to marry a woman, according to the website Simpsons Wikia. And Roscoe, who manages the Ajax Steel Mill in Springfield, is also gay along with his coworkers, who party at the mill at night when it transforms into a gay club.
Be sure to catch Season 27 of "The Simpsons" airing Sunday nights at 8 p.m. on Fox.
