When it was announced that Warner Bros. was creating a DC Extended Universe to rival Marvel's Cinematic Universe, it was naturally assumed that the studio's upcoming films would be connected somehow. As a result, multiple rumors pointed to Jared Leto's Joker appearing in some form in both of DC's offerings next year: "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" and "Suicide Squad." While that rumor remains the most popular and logical, it's still possible that another iconic DC character works as the connective tissue between "Batman V Superman" and "Suicide Squad."
Jesse Eisenberg will make his DCEU debut as Lex Luthor in the former film, and although his casting is polarizing, his character may become a central figure.
"While it remains only a rumor at this point, with the character not yet mentioned in any official announcement about the film, it's been heavily suggested that Suicide Squad will have a direct connection back to the events of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice - specifically through Lex Luthor," Adam Holmes of Cinema Blend wrote.
"...One report claimed that the Suicide Squad will be sent to stop Luthor's superhuman trafficking operation, and it's later learned that he has a master plan involving Enchantress. It may be a while before we get anything firm on this subject, as Luthor's mere presence in Suicide Squad could wind up being a spoiler for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. So we'll just have to wait and see how things pan out."
Luthor is rumored to harvest General Zod's (Michael Shannon) DNA and create Doomsday in "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice." If true, he'd already be knee deep in the metahuman game, which would make his rumored role in "Suicide Squad" all the more believable. One of the uses of a shared cinematic universe is to use one film to set up future storylines down the road. "Batman V Superman" would do that for "Suicide Squad" if the report turns out to be accurate.
"Batman V Superman" is due out on March 25, 2016 and "Suicide Squad" will follow on August 5.
