Nicki Minaj is set to return to acting with a new ABC Family series based around her childhood, Deadline Hollywood reported. The network announced a serious commitment to a show focused on the female hip-hop artist's upbringing in Queens, New York.
The project is set to portray a young Minaj and her experiences, from the time she emigrated from Trinidad in the 1990s with her family, to growing up in Queens, according to Vulture.
"Nicki Minaj is a force to be reckoned with at everything she touches," Karey Burke, ABC Family's EVP Programming and Development, told Deadline. "Nicki is an international superstar, yet not everyone knows how inspiring and hilarious her true story is, and we can't wait to share it with the world."
As a teen, Minaj attended the prestigious Manhattan performing arts school, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School and studied acting, according to Rolling Stone. While working on her highly successful music career (she's the only female rapper on Forbes' list of the highest paid rappers of 2015), she dipped her toe in acting with a role in 2014's "The Other Woman" and "Barbershop 3," which is scheduled for a 2016 release.
"This is one of the more unique adventures I've ever embarked on," Minaj told Deadline. "I couldn't be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special."
Minaj will serve as executive producer and also appear in the series, and the Kate Angelo-written pilot will begin filming in Queens this winter. No casting details have been released, but Minaj announced via her Instagram page that she has started her search for the lucky girl who will portray "young Nicki" on the show.
