The New Orleans Saints are off to an 0-3 start and things don't seem too great for them as Drew Brees is dealing with a shoulder injury that may hinder him for the rest of the season. The Saints defense has allowed more than 25 points in each game so far and is a big part of the problem but they may be getting a huge boost this week as top cornerback Keenan Lewis reportedly has a "really good chance" to play on Sunday against the Cowboys, according to Mike Triplett of ESPN.
Lewis underwent hip surgery in the final week of the preseason and was forced to miss the first three weeks but he seems really confident he will be back on the field for week four.
"I'm up. I'm going. I feel good, especially because I don't have to watch anymore. I can get out there with my teammates and show the hard work that we all put in in the summertime and OTAs, training camp," said Lewis.
Head coach Sean Payton also reportedly feels that Lewis will likely be back on the field but he also stated that he will likely have his snaps limited as he gets back to full speed. Even though he may be limited the Saints could certainly use Lewis back as their defense has struggled so far this season.
Through three games the Saints rank 28th in yards allowed and 26th in points allowed per game. Lewis is the clear number one cornerback for the Saints and they have missed him a ton as they have allowed six passing touchdowns so far this season and have yet to get an interception. Lewis is a lockdown corner and should be able to help solve some of these problems upon his return.
In Lewis' absence the Saints have been playing Brandon Browner, Delvin Breaux and Damian Swann. Browner has been a huge disappointment but Breaux and Swann have been impressive so adding a true number one corner to those two should lead to some improvement.
In his two seasons prior to this one with the Saints, the 29 year old Lewis had never missed a game and racked up six interceptions. The Saints will be taking on a Cowboys team this week that will be without their quarterback, Tony Romo, and their top receiver, Dez Bryant, so Lewis may matchup against Terrance Williams while he's out there. Some fans would argue that Lewis has been the team's best player over the past couple of years so having him back, even if it is in a limited role initially, will be huge for the defense and the team as a whole.
