After a shooting at Oregon's Umpqua Community College that resulted in 11 casualties - including the shooter - and seven injuries, the community of Roseburg is trying to rebuild.
A firefight ensued between police and the shooter who was heavily armed. "You will never hear us mention his name," Sheriff John Hanlin said Thursday night, according to NBC News, based on the shooter's deeds. Also, he urged the public "not to glorify and create sensationalism for him. He in no way deserves it," according to The New York Times.
The shooter allegedly shot Christians solely based on their religion. Anastasia Boylan was one of the shooter's victims. She recounted the incident saying the shooter told the students to stand up if they were Christians. "And they would stand up and he said, 'Good, because you're a Christian, you're going to see God in just about one second,'" Boylan told her father before going into spinal surgery.
President Obama has condemned the shooter's acts as domestic terrorism. "Somehow this has become routine. The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine, the conversation in the aftermath of it ... We have become numb to this," Obama said.
Umpqua Community College is "a peaceful, safe atmosphere," according to the school's website.
