Green Bay Packers fans and Eddie Lacy fantasy football owners, take heart - Lacy indicated recently that his current ankle injury, unlike ankle injuries he's sustained in the past, like the one he suffered during his initial NFL season, is already on the mend.
"It's better than that because it's not going to be a lingering thing," Lacy said Thursday, via Rob Demovsky of ESPN. "It's going away. My rookie year, it really didn't go away."
Lacy suffered a similar injury during his rookie season, but even that didn't limit his effectiveness as he shot out of the NFL gate to the tune of 1,178-yards and 11 touchdowns. Fans and fantasy owners hoping to see the same type of production out of Lacy this season should remain cautiously optimistic. While Lacy said the injury, which limited him against the Kansas City Chiefs, is improving, it's still not fully healed.
Lacy saw 10 carries against the Chiefs on Thursday, managing 46-yards, which, if you're a math whiz, works out to about 4.6 yards-per-carry. It's a good total and when you add in his three receptions for 41-yards, his output really doesn't seem all that bad. But it's not a Week Three matchup against the Chiefs that the Super Bowl-hopeful Packers are likely worried about. Their main concern is keeping Lacy fresh for the entire season as they chase another Lombardi Trophy.
While Lacy should, barring a setback, get back to a leading role in the Packers backfield soon, it may not come this week against the San Francisco 49ers and it may ultimately be Green Bay's running back depth that could cause fantasy owners some concern. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy indicated that he liked what he saw out of the rotation of Lacy, James Starks and rookie Alonzo Harris against Kansas City and may stick with it in order to preserve Lacy for the long haul.
