U.S. Coast Guard Searching For Cargo Ship Lost In Hurricane Joaquin

The U.S. Coast Guard is looking for a cargo ship that has been lost in the Bahamas. There were 33 people aboard, according to Fox News.

Hurricane Joaquin, a Category 4 storm, hit around the same time the ship disappeared. The ship, named El Faro, was traveling to Jacksonville, Fla. from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The ship lost power around 7 a.m. EST Thursday. Of those onboard, 28 were Americans.

Two Air Force C-130 Hurricane Hunter crews were dispatched to find the ship on Thursday, but they were unable to locate the El Faro. Attempts to establish contact with the ship have been unsuccessful.

The hurricane hit the Bahamas hard on Friday, the Associated Press reported. "This vessel is disabled basically right near the eye of Hurricane Joaquin...We're going to go and try and save lives. We're going to push it to the operational limits as far as we can," Capt. Mark Fedor said.

The planes and helicopters involved in the search returned to base Friday evening, hampered by visibility conditions after sunset. The search will resume Saturday morning.

Hurricane Joaquin also lost some of its power on Friday and has been downgraded to a Category 3 storm, according to ABC News.
