'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' Trailer: Legolas Returns And Smaug's Deep Voice Is Heard In New Preview For Upcoming Film

Last year the latest adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy books, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" premiered to a welcoming audience of existing fans and people new to the franchise. Now the second part of "The Hobbit" trilogy has a new trailer complete with breathtaking visuals and hints at the upcoming plot.

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" trailer begins with a voice over by Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) complimenting the great dragon, likely in an attempt to flatter him into not using Bilbo as a tooth pick. From there it shows fans more exciting sites around Middle Earth as Bilbo and the company of dwarfs continue their journey to battle the "stupendous" dragon and reclaim their home world.

Perhaps one of the most exciting elements of the trailer, for fans of the original trilogy, is seeing Orlando Bloom's Legolas back in action. As the dwarves seek help from the enemy that abandoned them years ago, Legolas returns (or arrives depending on your preferred chronology) battling orcs and other monsters to help Gandalf and the dwarves on their way.

Speaking of Gandalf. The trailer contains a huge wink to "The Lord of The Rings" in the form of Bilbo hiding his find from the first film. ***SPOILER ALERT*** When in the troll caves, Bilbo stumbles upon Smeagol, the creature who had ownership of the one ring. Bilbo steals it and uses its power of invisibility to escape. In the trailer he almost tells Gandalf that he found something, but quickly hides the ring in his pocket and simply tells the wizard that he had found his courage in the caves.

"Good," the gray wizard replies. "You'll need it."

The trailer climaxes with Bennedict Cumberbatch lending his low tones to the voice of the dragon as he stalks Bilbo throughout the treasure room.

"Come now, don't be shy. Step into the light," the dragon says before enfulphing the screen in flames.

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" opens on December 13. You can check out the trailer below and then comment and share your thoughts.
