White House officials announced that President Obama will travel to Roseburg, Ore. on Friday to meet with survivors and families of the victims of last week's Umpqua Community College shooting incident.
The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity since the schedule has yet to be finalized, stated Obama would meet with the families privately, according to People.
26-year-old Christopher Harper Mercer opened fire inside a classroom at the college last Thursday, killing eight classmates and an instructor before committing suicide during a shootout with police.
Obama was visibly angry in public comments after the shooting, denouncing opponents of gun safety legislation and urging Americans to pay close attention to what candidates are saying about gun control.
"This is a political choice that we make to allow this to happen every few months in America," Obama lamented, according to The New York Times. "We collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones because of our inaction."
Spurred on by the shooting, Obama has gone so far as to even plan to issue executive orders on gun control.
Prior to planning the visit, Obama was scheduled to make a trip to the West Coast over the weekend to raise money for Democratic candidates in Washington and California, reported to USA Today. He is expected to return to Washington at the beginning of next week.
